Dubai is making waves with a new pilot initiative aimed at reducing working hours for government employees during the hot summer months. The initiative Dubai introduces Our Flexible Summer to reduce work hours was recently announced by the Dubai Government Human Resources Department (DGHR) and is set to run from August 12 to September 30.
Our Flexible Summer For Government Employees
Fifteen government entities will participate in this pilot, which will see work hours reduced to seven hours per day. Notably, the initiative will suspend work on Fridays, extending the weekend for employees in participating departments. This change will offer a longer break during the typically grueling summer months, providing much-needed relief and promoting better work-life balance.

Most government employees in Dubai currently enjoy a two-and-a-half-day weekend, with a half-day on Friday and full days off on Saturday and Sunday. With the new initiative, these employees will enjoy an extended weekend for the seven-week duration of the pilot.
Enhancing Workplace Flexibility
While the DGHR has not disclosed which specific government entities will be part of the pilot, they have emphasized that the initiative is designed to enhance workplace flexibility. By reducing work hours, the DGHR aims to ensure a safer work environment during the summer heat and promote a better balance between professional and personal life.
To gauge the potential success of this initiative, the department conducted a survey to measure the willingness of government agencies to adopt shorter working hours during the summer. The proposal received overwhelming support, indicating a strong desire for changes that would benefit employees’ well-being.
Boosting Productivity and Employee Satisfaction
One of the key goals of ‘Our Flexible Summer’ is to assess how reduced work hours impact productivity. Studies in both the UAE and globally have shown that shorter working hours can lead to increased productivity. The DGHR plans to closely monitor the results, including feedback from employees, to determine the overall success of the initiative.
Sharjah’s example is particularly telling. The emirate, which implemented a three-day weekend, reported an 88% increase in productivity and a 90% boost in job satisfaction. Customer satisfaction also improved, with a reported 94% service satisfaction rate.
A Vision for a Better Future
Abdullah Ali bin Zayed Al Falasi, the director-general of the DGHR, highlighted the broader vision behind the initiative. “The launch will further our vision to empower human resources by developing smart solutions and innovative policies to uplift Dubai’s competitiveness,” he said. He emphasized that the initiative aims to enhance employees’ quality of life while promoting the sustainable use of government resources, positioning Dubai as a city that leads in providing an exceptional lifestyle.

As the pilot progresses, the DGHR will regularly assess the feedback and create a final report summarizing the outcomes. This report will include recommendations on whether the initiative can be expanded to other government entities in the future.
With this innovative approach, Dubai continues to demonstrate its commitment to improving the lives of its workforce while maintaining high levels of productivity and efficiency. The ‘Our Flexible Summer’ initiative could be a game-changer, setting a new standard for work-life balance in the region.
